Insulating Glass Unit Testing

TS EN 1279-2 Long-Term Test Method for Moisture Penetration Index (With and Without Desiccant)

Introduction

The TS EN 1279-2 test applies to all insulating glass unit manufacturers. Double-glazed units are subjected to temperature and humidity cycles. The moisture content of each sample (desiccant) is measured before and after the climate conditioning test; thus, the amount of moisture entering the sample (the effectiveness of the seal against moisture penetration) and the desiccant's ability to absorb moisture entering between the panes are determined. The result is reported as "Pass" or "Fail" depending on whether the moisture penetration index remains below the reference level specified in the standard. The tests take approximately 24 weeks.

Samples

15 samples are required for testing. The samples must measure 352 mm (±2 mm) x 502 mm (±2 mm). Samples should be delivered to the laboratory 4-6 weeks before testing commences. Prior to testing, all samples are conditioned in a standard laboratory environment. Conditioning is performed at a temperature of 23°C (±2°C) and a relative humidity of 50% (±5%).

Dew Point Temperature Measurement

Dew point temperature measurements are performed only for samples without desiccant. The outer surfaces of the double-glazed units are cooled using ethanol and dry ice placed inside the cooling chamber. The temperature at which condensation appears on the inner surface of the unit is recorded. The dew point measurement is carried out to determine the water vapor pressure.

Measurement of Initial Moisture Content

The desiccant is removed from four samples, and the initial moisture content of these desiccant materials is determined, followed by the calculation of the average initial moisture content.

Climate Conditioning Tests

Five samples are placed into a climate chamber. The samples are kept under cyclic temperature and relative humidity conditions for 4 weeks. During this period, the samples are exposed to 56 cycles of 12-hour temperature and relative humidity changes. In each cycle, temperatures are varied from -18°C to 53°C. (Relative humidity during the high-temperature phase of the cycle is 95% or greater.) The samples are then transferred to another climate chamber. The samples are held in these climate test chambers for an additional 7 weeks. Here, the ambient temperature is maintained constantly at 58°C, and relative humidity is higher than 95%.

Measurement of Final Moisture Content

The desiccant is extracted from the conditioned samples, and the final moisture content of these desiccant materials, as well as the average final moisture content, is determined.

Standard Moisture Adsorption Capacity

The 1st and 15th samples can be kept as spares or used to measure the standard moisture adsorption capacity. For the standard moisture adsorption capacity, the client may submit a test report obtained from their supplier to the laboratory. If the manufacturer requests testing for moisture adsorption capacity, our laboratory can perform this test within our scope of accreditation.

Moisture Penetration Index

The initial and final moisture contents, together with the standard moisture adsorption capacity, are used to calculate both the individual moisture penetration indices and the average moisture penetration index. The average value must be less than 20%. The moisture penetration index of any individual double-glazed unit must not exceed 25%.

TS EN 1279-6 Annex B.4 Short-Term Test for Moisture Penetration Index

PRODUCT
Insulating Glass Unit

MATERIAL / COMPONENT TO BE TESTED
Insulating Glass Unit

TEST NAME
Short-term climate test for moisture penetration index

PURPOSE OF THE TEST
Conducted within the scope of Factory Production Control to determine whether the moisture penetration index remains sustainable.

TEST DESCRIPTION
Determines whether the quality of the insulating glass unit is compliant and long-lasting. Verifies the moisture penetration of the IGU and ensures the consistency of production practices. A short-term climate conditioning is conducted through this test, and the moisture penetration index is calculated at the end of the process. The moisture penetration index is verified for compliance with the standard's requirements.

TS EN 673 Calculation of Thermal Transmittance (U-Value)

PRODUCT
Insulating Glass Unit

MATERIAL / COMPONENT FOR CALCULATION
Insulating Glass Unit

CALCULATION NAME
Calculation of U-Value

PURPOSE OF CALCULATION
Calculates the thermal transmittance coefficient (U-Value) for insulating glass units.

CALCULATION DESCRIPTION
Based on the glass type used, coated or uncoated glass, and cavity specifications, the thermal transmittance coefficient is calculated to ensure heating and cooling costs of the building are kept to a minimum. The presence of a coating on the glass directly influences the thermal transmittance coefficient.
